today, the lilycove rangers have set up a small seminar to help train the next generation of trainers. while some have taken the more conventional approach of explaining what to do in certain situations, lance decides to duke it out over a pokemon battle.[break][break]

he hosts a small tournament, overseeing it as a judge.[break][break]

teaching kids what a proper battle is like is bound to look good on his portfolio. he takes the opportunity when it presents itself, which has an added bonus of acquainting himself with another captain.

"i won't disappoint, sir!" he answers with optimism.

he's never fought against kids before besides, well, when he was also a kid as well. those in his hometown were built different though, so he's not sure if he's going to hold back or not.

still, he made his promise. his buizel and him are going to impress if their life depended on it.

as soon as he was ready, he lowers his sights to match with the children's point of view. "alright kids, take out your pokemon," he patiently calls.

three kids look at ranger jake with determination in their eyes, ready to give the ranger a beatdown he won't ever forget.[break][break]

they throw their pokeballs high up in the air but because of their heights, it doesn't really get too high. maybe up to jake's head.[break][break]

he would swat one of the balls in the air if he could. unfortunately, they had to make some distance between them to demonstrate safety in pokemon battles.

three electric-types were facing his water-type in a flash.

"oh, you already know of type advantages? good job."

he would sound patronizing if it wasn't with children. then again, he would've said it to anyone else despite genuine intentions behind his words.

"and thank you for the chance. we'll be starting off with hydro pump now."

despite the offensive type advantage, these pokemon do not have the resistance against heavy water-type moves. the buizel starts to regurgitate a heavy jet of water, mowing down three little lightweight electric-type rats like the police using crowd control on a group of rioters.

the three rats start to drown under the torrent of HYDRO PUMP, unable to resist the pressure, and as all three of their trainers shout orders, they can't really hear them.[break][break]

but once the HYDRO PUMP stops, all three rats jump up and start scattering across the area only to shoot out THUNDERBOLTS at the buizel.[break][break]

"y-yeah! good job, squid, sloth, snail!"

maybe he can name his next pokemon giraffe and whale. these kids gives him inspiration.

...inspiration to beat up their pokemon, that is.

in an effort to style on these kids, jake uses the forbidden technique most pokemon trainers won't even think of using in a battle. "dodge it!"

it's the legendary move that none dare recreate.

the buizel jumps and gracefully dodges all the thunderbolt with little to no consequences. he stays up in the air for more than five seconds like he's capable of levitating, except he's not. it just opens him up to a good angle to snipe them off from above.

"swift!"

it's the counter for the forbidden move-- the never-miss moves like swift! in any case that they try to copy it, they'll fail since they're a bunch of scrubs, the stars will hit them.

it's like a meteor shower during the day. stars start to pelt the rats from above, their pointy edges hurting them so much because the move is just that good to not dodge.

not the dodge technique...[break][break]

"HUH?"[break][break]

none of the kids seem to be familiar or even expect the buizel to do such a thing. they just watch in awe as the water-type nimbly evades the THUNDERBOLTS only to throw back SWIFTS.[break][break]

"d-Dodge!"[break][break]

but they can't. the SWIFT cuts into the rodents; mostly sloth as it's the slowest of the bunch. sloth falls to the ground, knocked out.[break][break]

"what the!"[break][break]

in retaliation, squid shoots out a THUNDERBOLT only to be aided with snail's HELPING HAND.

his buizel was so good at dodging it starts showing off its agility. the way it runs around the battlefield leaves afterimages behind because he's just that good at the dodge strat.

as it circles around the animal named creatures, the buizel starts wrangling them up, water forming underneath them. slowly, it pulls all three in a vortex.

a whirlpool sucks all of them.

jake looks at his watch. it was about time this ends. surely, the children will just give up and this little fight ends soon, but it's very nice to see his pokemon not die in a single turn against electric-types.

when the water finally subsides, the kids rush to tend to their rats, scooping them up into their little arms before bursting out into tears.[break][break]

finishing up children's pokemon was easy for someone straight out of fight area, sinnoh. he didn't spectate all those fights for nothing.

as the finishing blow is landed, lance comes clapping like he did something. jake doesn't seem to mind though, and smiles at the comment.

"is it because this is a school? hehe, i get your pun."

whether it's intentional or not, he kind of feels bad for the children. maybe he should've let them get the win, but on the other hand, it's a good lesson to learn that losing is a normal part of pokemon battles.

"oh yeah, i'm looking for a recommendation letter for a promotion. would you mind if i ask you for it, please?"
